The Geometric Platter
The silversmith decorated this platter only on the rim and in the middle. Its highly polished concave surface scatters light as a distorting mirror. The edge of the rim bears a rhythmically repeated bead and reel ornament with a three-dimensional effect. The geometric pattern of the medallion surrounded by a gilded band is composed of a tapestry like pattern of connecting octagonal and quadrangular fields filled with stylised rosettes and palmettes.
The decoration of the platter is based on the shine of the silver and gilded surfaces, the matt black colour of the niello inlays and the play of contrast between them. Such heavy platters with large diameters were used during banquets for serving different dishes.
Deeper concave platters similar to the geometric platter were especially suitable for serving up sauced meat dishes. The plates laden with food were either placed on table stands or carried around by servants.
