378
Battle of Hadrianopolis
In 378 the Goths fleeing from the Huns arriving from the East inflicted a major defeat on the Roman army in the battle of Hadrianopolis ( today Edirne, Turkey), where Emperor Valens lost his life and a large part of the military forces of the Eastern part of the Empire also perished. After that the Goths ravaged the territory of the Balkans. A year after the victorious battle, the people consisting of Huns, Goths and Alans broke into the territory of Pannonia. During the war lasting nearly a year the Romans managed to restrain them. In the end the warfare ended with the conclusion of an alliance and the settlement of the barbarians in Pannonia.
