Reign of Emperor Valentinian I
Following the extinction of the Constantine dynasty the military proclaimed Valentinian born in Pannonia emperor. Valentinian appointed his younger brother, Valens, as co-ruler (364-378). During Valentinian’s reign the significant construction of fortresses began in the territory of Pannonia and on the left bank of the Danube. The conflict about a large-scale fortification (Göd –Bócsa-újtelep) envisaged to be built on some Germanic territory led to a bloody war. In 374 the Germanic Quadi and the Sarmatians together raided Pannonia, which caused huge devastation in the province. On hearing the news Valentinian travelled to Pannonia in spring 375 and began a punitive campaign against the barbarians. During the peace negotiations he died of a stroke in Brigetio (today Komárom–Szőny, Hungary) at the end of the year.
