161–180
Reign of Marcus Aurelius
During the reign of the philosopher emperor Marcus Aurelius one of the most destructive and longest military conflicts of the Roman Empire took place in the form of wars against the Germans and the Sarmatians (166-180). How prominent the events were is indicated by the fact that Marcus Aurelius personally led the military operations. The closure of the wars resulted great foreign and domestic political changes in the Carpathian Basin.
