Sack of Rome

The Western Goths led by King Alaric (395-410) besieged and sacked Rome in 410. Although at the time Rome had not been the capital of the Roman Empire for a long period, nevertheless the sacking of the Eternal City had huge symbolic significance. (For years Ravenna had been the capital of the Western Roman Empire, while Constantinopolis was that of the Eastern Roman Empire.)
